In Grade 12, students explore international human rights issues from the evaluative perspective of the universal, intrinsic, and inalienable characteristics of human dignity. Applying critical thinking and analysis tools, the Grade 12 curriculum examines in-depth contemporary international human rights issues, including sustainable development, violence against women and children, feminicide and global population policies. Heroes in this lesson include Devendra Agarwal – a social worker who leads an orphanage for abandoned girls – and others fighting femicide in Asia, India and China. From the Preamble of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a hallmark document in the development of a recognized system of human rights, to controversial ideas from Paul Ehrlich and Disney, students critically evaluate texts and media depictions throughout the decades to apprehend problematic ideologies that view persons as problems rather than solutions. The course culminates in a capstone project, introducing the Design Thinking method and teaching students a system by which to formulate solutions to real world problems.
